What is Past is Prologue

Four statues guard the National Archives Building in Washington, D.C. This one on the Pennsylvania Avenue side of the building. The female lifts her eyes from the pages of an open book and gazes into the future. Phrase at base inspired by Shakespeare's play The Tempest. "What is Past is Prologue."

Study the Past

On the Pennsylvania Avenue side of the building. An old man with a scroll and closed book teaches the lessons of the past. The phrase on the base is "Study the Past."

The Heritage of the Past
 is the Seed that Brings Forth
 the Harvest of the Future


On the Constitution Avenue side of the building.  A young female holds a child and a sheaf of wheat in her right hand as symbols of growth and hopefulness. In her left hand she protects an urn, symbolic of the ashes of the past. The words on the base say "The Heritage of the Past is the Seed that Brings Forth the Harvest of the Future."

Eternal Vigilance is the Price of Liberty



On the Constitution Avenue side of the building. Has  helmet, sword, and lion skin to protect the historical record for future generations. Phrase on base is  "Eternal Vigilance is the Price of Liberty."
